Due to its strategic position, Avranches has had a rich and colourful past.
Its origins date back millennia.
In the 1st century BCE, a Celtic tribe called the Abrincates (the people of the Abers) occupied the region and the city was an lively place.

An inspiration for writers as talented as Guy de Maupassant, Victor Hugo and Paul Féval, the Avranches Botanical Gardens are amongst the most beautiful in France. There are a great many remarkable trees and decorative beds. In the summer evenings, music and lights invite visitors to stroll around the gardens and discover some unique views of the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay.
The music and lights are run from end-June to early September.
The gardens are open every day from 8.30am to nightfall.

The bay is an exceptional sight because of the great tides, the sheer size of the foreshore, the richness of the fauna and flora, its picturesque traditional activities and of course, the presence of Mont Saint-Michel "Wonder of the World".
But one must never forget the dangers hidden by its great beauty...never venture on the shores alone. Get some information and use an experienced guide to take you out as safely and securely as possible. The Mont-St-Michel Bay Guides offer different crossings: on foot, on horseback or in a horse-drawn cart.

"Upon arrival in Avranches, I was led to the Botanical Gardens, at the edge of the city. I cried out in delight. An immeasurable bay stretched out as far as my eyes could see, between two wide ridges lost in the delicate fog. And in the middle of this immense tawny bay, under a golden and clear sky, rose from the sands a strange, sober and pointed mountain."

Extract from "Le Horla" by Guy de Maupassant
